Hayden would be lying on the floor in tears almost daily in pain, and very lethargic. He had large bags under his eyes, and terrible stomach pains. Hayden was losing weight drastically. My two yr old was wasting away before my eyes. We spent many days in the ER. He was dehydrated, had a "virus", or was passing a "bug". Vomiting, diarrhea for months. Many GI appts, many specialists, but never any answers.
He also was staring spells, and falling down a lot. We were at my mom's house one time and we were walking down the stairs. Hayden stopped and just starred ahead of him. I couldn't get him out of this trans like state. I waved my hand in front of his face, called his name, shook his arms and then after about a minute or two he snapped out of it and was acting real strange, then fell asleep. He continued these episodes and also continued the sickness he was experiencing. He was getting worse it seemed at the year went on.
When he was falling down, it was not your typical fall and put your hands out to catch yourself, he didn't. He always had big bruises on his head from his head hitting the sidewalk or floor. His hands were not within his reflex action.
Those starring episodes were eventually called Absence Seizures or Petit Mal Seizures.
As the year progressed in 2005, Hayden got more sick. He would lay on the kitchen floor listless, groaning and lifeless. We didn't know what else to do. The ER would again label it "virus". I was so frustrated and mad that my baby was so ill and I couldn't help him. He was vomiting and having chronic diarrhea and if I didn't find help for him, he was going to die. I need to do something.
Come December 2005, it got so bad and he became so dehydrated they hospitalized him. They ran many, many tests. They did find a UPJ obstruction in his kidney. He had a surgery to repair that and had an incision that measures about 4 inches across his side around to his back. We were all hoping that was the problem!
Within days he began vomiting and all of his sickness over again, it did not help the problem. The doctor said that the UPJ obstruction must have been a coincidental find and we would have needed to get that taken care of eventually anyway. Most people find that problem once they move off to college and start binge drinking, their kidneys can't handle it. Ughhh, we are back at square one, now with a surgical recovering two year old that is very sick and not happy with these doctors.
December 19th, 2005 he was released from the hospital after two weeks there and no answers, ordered to follow up with the GI as an outpatient. Also now to follow up with the urologist.
Fast forward to February 06, We were seen at the top GI office in the state and he didn't know why they didn't scope him in the hospital. He ordered that. The scope showed some questionable things for Celiac Disease. Somewhat positive, but yet not 100% positive. Try the Gluten Free diet and see what happens.
So we did. Here are the results, they speak for themselves. Six week difference and he was a whole new child! He was then diagnosed with Celiac Disease!
All of his brothers were ordered the test for it too. Sawyer 9mos old at the time tested positive on both blood work and biopsy. He is also Celiac!
